SO MUCH MORE

Although the criminal lawyer is the one most familiar from TV and novels, there are many other ways to practice law. Unlike a criminal lawyer, a civil lawyer focuses on such legal documents as wills, trusts, contracts, titles, and leases. Civil law, as opposed to criminal law, settles disputes in which money (compensation) may be awarded to the victim(s). A number of specialties are available for civil lawyers, depending on their passions and interests. These specialties include:

• Bankruptcy law

• Environmental law

• Family law

• Intellectual property law

• Probate law

• Real estate law

• Insurance law

• International law

• Elder law

Regardless of which type of legal practice interests you, one trait necessary to being a lawyer is a love of learning. In addition to a four-year college degree and three years of law school to achieve a JD, there’s still more to learn.

In order to be a practicing attorney, it’s necessary for a prospective lawyer to pass the bar exam for the jurisdiction where they wish to practice. This is a two-day exam composed of separate tests in varying formats, including multiple choice and essay. The bar exam tests an applicant’s knowledge of many facets of law that were covered in school.

In addition, most states require prospective lawyers to pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). This exam tests the applicant’s understanding of the standards of professional conduct expected of practicing attorneys. Admission to the bar might also require passing an ethics tests or interview, a thorough background check, and fingerprinting.

Even after being admitted to the bar, there’s still more to learn. A lawyer might choose to become more specialized and pursue their LLM degree. Most states require lawyers to complete a certain amount of continuing education each year. New laws are constantly being written and old ones struck down or reinterpreted.
